Meeting Minutes:

This last meeting was postponed from our normal meeting time and rescheduled the following Tuesday at Bob Blagg’s veterinary clinic. This is normally set aside for third Tuesday fly tying and that is just what we did.

Time Flies

As the New Year comes blowing in with the north wind this morning, I see deer season leaving us and my thoughts are now drifting back to the dusty rods and reels on the wall and the fishing trips yet to be.

Not that I know I will be president of a great club, I wish to give thanks to Mike who worked hard as our president last year. I hope he gained a lot of good memories from it. I also hope my ideas will improve our club and may I say I will always be open to new ones.

As a member of the Central Texas Flyfishers club for three years I ask myself why I stayed in this club when other clubs did not hold my interest very long.

Could it be because we:

Have some great fishing trips? No, although we do.

Find out from other members where the fish are biting best? No, although we do.

Have guest speakers from Texas Parks and Wildlife, other clubs, and all types of interesting people? No, although we do.

Assist with all types of community projects to help others? No, although we do.

Learn skills and information from each other, many of whom I consider experts in many areas? No, although we do.

See the joy in a person's face when they learn how easy it is to be a fly fisherman? No, although we do.

Have some great family get-togethers that all enjoy? No, although we do.

Have members that like helping and working to make this the best club ever? No, although we do.

Although all of the above are very good reasons, I have come to the conclusion that the number one reason is very simple. In our club is the greatest group of people you will find under one roof that just wish to have fun and enjoy friendship.

Thanks for letting me be part of this experience.

Around The Next Bend

Now that we've finally arrived in the new millennium, it's time to personally reflect on the past year. Don't think that I'll wax poetically about it either. The passage of time weathers us much like the stones in the river some of us are just gather more moss and are rough around our edges, still others become smoother.

One of last year's slicker days prevented us from having a full meeting last month. I felt it was better to error on the side of caution than to have people venture out in dangerous weather. I'd like to thank Billy Wofford and Matt Jennings for informing members about the cancellation. Ronnie Ray of Tejas Outfitters will be giving his presentation at this month's meeting, he's very knowledgeable and personable.

With the new year comes new club officers, Terry Blackwell, President, Joel Chavez as Vice President, Kim Heaston now as official Secretary, Billy Wofford continues his duties as Education, Conservation, and Community Affairs Officer; Kevin Duren and Johnny Quiroz, are the new Outings Directors, and through the graciousness of his heart, Bob Blagg continues as Treasurer. I have great confidence in the new team as they continue to guide the club around the next bend.

The food drive was a great success for the Southside Community Center. Our club indirectly benefited with a front page picture on the San Marcos Daily Record. I hope our generosity encouraged others to give of themselves.

Our annual banquet is set for Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the Southside Community Center. The club will again provide BBQ'd Brisket and Sausage. As in past years, members and their guests are asked to bring covered side dishes, breads, desserts or beverages. There will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting, we will need to know how many people will be attending, in order to plan effectively. This year, we will have several silent auction items, in addition to door prizes, as well as some surprises.

It's time for membership dues to be collected, the rates remain $15 a year for individuals, $20 for Family Membership and $7 for Student Memberships. We use the revenue to subsidize club endeavors, such as the newsletter, river access at Rio Raft, and Federation of Fly Fishers Club fees.

One of the brighter sides of regaining my status of "ubiquitous member" (after the banquet) is that I'll be able to write this column without having to figure out how to work in the club administrative material. It will be an interesting transition for me, and hopefully an enjoyable one for you.

I've enjoyed serving as CTF President and seeing what's around the next bend with you in that capacity. Then again life is an adventure -- let's venture on!
